I’m no saint when it comes to not borrowing from other people’s cultures once in a while. I’m admittedly inconsistent with what I deem appropriate and inappropriate. (Gwen Stefani wearing a bindi? I thought it was hot. Russian ice dancers in aboriginal garb? Deplorable.)
Adrienne K. of Native Appropriations was picked up by Jezebel for pointing out 2010 fashion designers’ bend toward Native American design elements. Its statements like hers that remind me I should think twice before buying into the latest trend forecasts.
I love how Native American trends are “global”–um, you can’t get more American than the styles of the original peoples in the US.
