“In my early years as a fashion editor I worked with Norman Parkinson, who was a really big photographer, and he taught me to always keep your eyes open, you know, never go to sleep in the car or anything like that. Keep watching, because whatever you see out the window, or wherever, it can inspire you.”
I like going to the movies, but sometimes consuming film at home on my own terms and at my own pace is far more conducive to me appreciating the content more. I still try to scribble in the dark of the theater when something worth remembering comes up, but with Netflix streaming, I can pause, rewind, and press play to capture exactly what caught my attention in Grace Coddington.
Other things that caught my attention in The September Issue:
- The distinct use of Archer the Typeface. (Sounds like an evil nickname. Benji the Pieface.)
- All the Ratatat! Out of all my self-identifying “fashionista” (Gad, I have qualms with that word.) friends who lined up for September, not a single one told me Ratatat was all over the soundtrack. Oh, well. Guess they were actually paying attention to the film.
