An appeal for Critter.
Hi [Landlord],
Sorry in advance for this unexpected email. Last week Bill and I were in and out, taking stuff in from my car to the house, and on the last trip to carry things we noticed an old cat watching us and hovering around the front door. We hadn’t seen this cat before, so we didn’t let it inside or anything, but we pet it a couple of times and it became obvious that the cat had been craving human attention.
That was Saturday night, so we left the cat outside and decided that if it was still there in the morning, we’d take it to the animal shelter. On Sunday morning, the cat was still at the front door. We drove to our friend’s house to borrow a cat carrier, put the cat inside (She put up no resistance.), and took her to the shelter.
I called to check in on the cat yesterday, and no one has reported her as lost or missing. The veterinarian technician who examined and vaccinated the cat described her as a 13-year old declawed, house-trained “sweetheart.” In accordance with Berkeley Animal Services’ procedures, the cat is going up for adoption today, a week after we brought her in.
I know that you have had cats before and was wondering if you’d be interested in adopting her. It was really coincidental that we found her/she found us when she did. I have a major soft spot for this cat and feel like she needs a forever home. I’d imagine that because she has been declawed, she wouldn’t be capable of the typical damage one would expect of a normal housecat. Her energy seems lower than younger cats, and multiple people at the shelter described her as non-threatening, one even said vulnerable.
I know our original lease specifies no pets on the premises, but if there was any way you’d consider allowing an older, declawed cat, I’d feel greatly fulfilled to take care of her. If you’re open to going with us to meet the cat, I’ll gladly accompany you on a visit. Or, if you know of anyone interested in taking in a cat, that would be great news, too.
She purrs a lot and mewed when we closed the door on her. I just think she deserves to be taken off the streets.
Please let me know if there’s any availability in your house or flexibility within our lease. Of course we’d be happy to discuss a pet deposit with you.
Thank you and have a good weekend,
Mayka
