‘Member when I was a wee little intern for that quintessentially indie rag, The San Francisco Bay Guardian? One of my first pieces was an interview with a guy you can thank whenever you see a well-dressed head: Ben Goorin, President of Goorin Bros. (Read “SF soul on top, all over.”)
In a cheesy full-circle move, Goorin set up pop-up shop at the SFBG’s Best of the Bay party, the last Guardian function I attended as an intern. (Pretty much the last thing I did, too, due the timing of a lot of transitions.) At the time I just wasn’t ready for hats. For one, I was making beans, for two, I simply wasn’t ready for hats. I didn’t know how to wear them, if they’d work with my hair, or how to make them work with my outfit. So while many hats on the table called to me at the BoB party, I ended up going home with just a purse. Simple, one-of-a-kind pattern, and all of $15, it has served me well a good one and a half years later.
While jamming throughout the three-day haze that is WWD MAGIC, Jackie and I happened upon the Goorin Brothers booth. It’s just so awesome to see all those hats, cleanly displayed in rows. I can’t wait to get my head in the Wilma that’s coming out for Fall, because yes, I finally figured out how to wear hats. I chatted it up with the rep Brian, because I just had to bring up the hometown pride the Bay has for Goorin (an SF institution) and my own history with the brand. He was super sweet and offered Jackie and me giveaway hats!
Brian gestured to his left/my right, and there.
The complement to the purse I had acquired nearly two years before:
