Mayka Mei lives and breathes Moxsie, the Palo Alto online clothing retailer that employs her. As its community manager, she is the social-media voice of the company on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.”When I’m at a party, I tweet about what people are wearing, and people love it,” Mei, whose job is definitely no 9-to-5 gig, said in a recent phone interview. The people who follow Mei’s tweets are more than 136,000 strong, and the 3-year-old Moxsie, with a staff of 17 people, has about 39,000 Facebook fans.
Jobs like Mei’s — which were scarce or non-existent 10 or even five years ago — are helping fuel a tech rebound. Last week, California reported that despite seasonal job losses, the San Jose metropolitan area added more than 8,000 tech-related jobs in information services and manufacturing.
