Spent the weekend breezing through the BBC series Pulling. One could describe it as the British Sex and the City, but it’s far more over-the-top than SATC. Whereas American protagonist Carrie is neurotic, British protagonist Donna is a sociopath. I’m hard-pressed to try to determine who is more annoying. Both are funny series, but generally Pulling gets more audible laughs out of me.
I don’t mean this in a “Ew, she ugly” kind of way or “Alan looks like a girl!” kind of way. Just – isn’t it interesting how men can look like women? Tanya Franks, who plays the mean-spirited and awful alcoholic “slag” Karen, is the spitting female image of Alan Rickman. And yet, they are both attractive in respectively distinctly female and male ways. Just look:
Hard to find the ideal side-by-side pairing. Usually Franks is smiling and usually Rickman (as Severus Snape, who’d have the most Franks-like hair) is scowling.
Other cross-gender lookalikes: Meg Whitman and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Seriously.
